Commercial
A commercial steam room may operate for most of the day, every day. That places far more demand on the generator, the vapour-control system, the water supply and the plant room than any home installation. The specification has to be set for that duty from the start.
We plan commercial steam rooms with operators, architects, builders and services engineers — from equipment selection and plant space through to commissioning, staff handover and servicing.
What we plan for
Generators chosen for the hours the room runs, not only its size. Scale and element wear build up with every operating hour, and manufacturers set guarantee terms by use, so a generator that suits the room can still be wrong for the duty.
Vapour-control and membrane systems rated for continuous rather than intermittent use, installed exactly to the system documentation.
Water tested before installation, softening where hardness exceeds the manufacturer’s limits, and automatic draining and rinsing that flush out minerals before they settle as scale.
A ventilation approach chosen early and coordinated with the building’s mechanical services; some manufacturers make it mandatory for public rooms.
Harvia limits the air around its generators to 30 °C, and many Queensland roof spaces and cupboards run hotter. A ventilated, drained plant space close to the room, with access for descaling and sediment removal, is planned early.
Harvia requires a full professional service at least twice a year in community and institutional use, and its generators show a service reminder by operating hours. Keep a record of every service visit.

Plant and service
Generators are sensitive to heat, scale and access. A cool, ventilated plant room close to the steam room — with drainage and room to work — turns most maintenance into routine, scheduled visits rather than unplanned closures.

Questions
Commercial rooms run for many hours a day, so they need generators chosen for that duty, continuous-use membrane systems, water treatment, a ventilation strategy, an accessible plant room and planned professional servicing.
Commercial saunas and steam rooms guideOften. Hard water leaves scale on elements and sensors, causing faults and poor output. Manufacturers recommend testing the water before installation and softening where hardness exceeds their limits; some require it for public facilities.
Steam water quality guideHarvia requires steam generators in community and institutional use to be serviced thoroughly by a professional at least twice a year, and its generators show a service reminder after 200 operating hours. Between visits, staff carry out only the tasks the manual allows, such as emptying the sediment cup and descaling. Other manufacturers set their own schedules.
Steam generator maintenanceYes. Larger rooms may need more than one generator, and some set-ups run several generators from one control, rinsing them in turn so the steam never stops completely. A second unit only reduces the impact of a fault if each is sized and plumbed so the room still performs with one out of service.
