Large commercial sauna with two tiers of timber benches and concealed lighting

Saunas built for constant use.

For gyms, hotels, wellness clubs, recovery facilities and residential developments.

A different class of project

Longer hours, more people, higher expectations.

A commercial sauna may run for many hours a day, host a steady stream of people and be cleaned daily. That changes the specification: the heater and controls, the stone mass, the bench construction, the drainage and the way the room is serviced all need to be chosen for duty, not just for appearance. Wear is counted in operating hours, so a busy sauna can need in weeks the stone and service attention a home sauna needs in a year.

We work with operators, developers, architects and builders from early planning through to commissioning, handover and ongoing service.

What we plan for

Six priorities for a commercial sauna.

  1. 01

    Duty-rated heaters

A commercial heater may run 12 hours or more a day. Heaters and controls are chosen for those hours and the supervision model, because manufacturers set guarantee terms and on-time limits by use class.

  2. 02

    Stones and recovery

Commercial heaters carry far more stone to hold heat through constant door openings. Heavy use breaks stones down fast, and crumbled stones choke the airflow and overheat the elements, so stone checks follow the hours of use.

  3. 03

    Benches for heavy use

Stable timbers, sealed end grain, robust concealed fixings and replaceable slats so worn sections are renewed, not rebuilt.

  4. 04

    Hygiene and cleaning

Surfaces and drainage that support a written cleaning regime, using products approved for the timber and equipment.

  5. 05

    Safety and supervision

Glazing for visibility, outward-opening doors, an emergency call point, time limits set at commissioning and clear safe-use signage.

  6. 06

    Service and plant access

Access to the heater’s elements, a heater that can still be removed after fit-out and a dry, reachable spot for its power unit, so servicing never means dismantling the room.

Sectors

Where commercial saunas work hardest.

Each setting has its own pattern of use — peak periods in a gym, guests at all hours in a hotel, residents in an apartment amenity. We plan capacity, controls and maintenance around how the facility actually operates.

  • Gyms and health clubs
  • Hotels and resorts
  • Wellness and recovery centres
  • Apartment developments
  • Sports facilities
Commercial capability

Compliance and licensed trades

Public-health, accessibility and building requirements for commercial saunas vary by jurisdiction and building class. They are confirmed with the project's designer, building certifier and local council for each project, and all electrical and plumbing work is carried out by licensed trades to the manufacturers' instructions.

Questions

Common questions

Can a commercial sauna run all day?

Only if the heater, controller and supervision arrangements are set up for it. Heater manufacturers describe use classes with different maximum on-times, and the longest settings are generally reserved for public saunas with staff in attendance. Harvia’s Fenix control, for example, offers commercial limits of 12, 18 or 24 hours.

Controls for commercial use
Can a residential heater be used in a commercial sauna?

It is not advisable. Commercial heaters are built for long daily running, with heavier construction, more stone and, on some models, elements that can be serviced without unloading the stones. Warranty terms for commercial use are often much shorter, or excluded, on residential products. Choose equipment rated for your operating hours and confirm warranty terms in writing.

Residential vs commercial heaters
How often are stones checked in a commercial sauna?

Far more often than at home. Harvia asks for stones to be rearranged at least once a year, and more often with frequent use. Other manufacturers publish commercial intervals of every two to three months, or set them by operating hours. Follow the interval for your heater and record each check.

Can a large commercial sauna have two heaters?

Not with Harvia heaters. Harvia’s manuals, including those for its commercial ranges, allow only one electric heater per sauna room, so a large room gets one correctly sized commercial heater. Other manufacturers set their own rules, and the manual for the selected heater governs.

Can the sauna connect to our building management system?

Some control ranges offer gateways to common building protocols and remote monitoring. Availability depends on the product, so the protocol should be confirmed with your services engineer before equipment is selected.
